the world's oldest joke...

...is a sexist fart joke.

The oldest recorded joke is from Sumer in 1900 BC:

"Something which has never occurred since time immemorial; a young woman did not fart in her husband's lap."

Those wacky Sumerians.

I thought it was going to involve "the aristocrats" or something.

That's why we invaded them. To replace sexist fart jokes with free-market democracy.

I liked the 8th oldest joke: Augustus was touring his Empire and noticed a man in the crowd who bore a striking resemblance to himself. Intrigued he asked: "Was your mother at one time in service at the Palace?" "No your Highness," he replied, "but my father was." (Credited to the Emporer Augustus 63 BC – 29 AD)

And this one from Groucho Marx, who has a page of quotations on the Dave website:

"What do you get if you cross an insomniac, an agnostic and a dyslexic? Someone who stays up all night wondering if there is a dog."

Garpu --

This is the oldest written joke. The oral tradition of the "Aristocrats" goes back to Homo Erectus.

I couldn't find the list on that site. Do they include the exchange between Alexander the Great and Diogenes the Cynic? Alexander asked him if he could do anything for the great philosopher and Diogenes said, "Yes -- move, you're blocking the sun."

Yeah, I couldn't find it on their web site either, but I came across it through a back door.

The World's ten oldest jokes.
