if you have nine spare minutes...

...this is a great song. The Decemberists, "The Mariner's Revenge Song":

That was good.

Ironically, I just checked out a compilation album (Dark Was the Night), in part because I wanted to listen the Decemberists. I kept encountering their name and wanted to hear them. Can't say I was very impressed with their song on that disc, but this makes me want to give them another listen.

I looked up the lyrics to the song and liked this inserted in the middle: [haunting, sailor-esque musical interlude lead by mandolin, accordion and tuba].

I just looked up the compilation you mentioned and I don't know that song. I got this CD (Picaresque) because of the Mariner's Revenge Song and I really love the whole album. Lots of story songs and a kind of pop-dramaticism that shows a lot of Beatles influence. I want to get some more of their stuff.

mandolin, accordion and tuba

That just never gets old :)

Cool songs from the Dark Was the Night comp:

Kronos Quartet doing Blind Willie Johnson! "Dark Was the Night."

Sufjan Stevens: "You Are the Blood." Totally different from his folk-oriented stuff I had heard.

Crystal,

More tuba!

I'm not at all familiar with Sufjan Stevens -- just his name, that's all.

William,

If only Christopher Walkin would do a music video for The Decemberists.

Holy cow! I don't know why, but I listened to the whole thing, and found it haunting, really captivating, and I couldn't bring myself to break away. Thanks for the post!
