an announcement...

Just one little thing...

ANYONE WHO MAINTAINS THAT OFFSHORE DRILLING WILL HAVE ANY EFFECT ON CURRENT GAS PRICES IS LYING OR MISINFORMED.

That's all, thank you. Now I have to get back to work.

AMEN!

And if they think our weak dollar is going to be able to buy some of that projected oil they are sadly mistaken as well: without a nationalised oil production, we will be outbid, even if oil is discovered on the north side of Liberty Island.

Thanks Huw. It's a typical GOP ploy -- a play at economic populism for political purposes that in the end is good for nothing but making people who are already filthy rich even more so.

Also amen!

I've stood on the sandy shores of beautiful Santa Barbara and gazed out towards the ocean, to see .... off-shore oil rigs :(

but but but Liam! we demand action! whatever the hell it is it has to look like ACTION!!! even if it means nothing and even if any potential so-called "benefits" are distant and improbable.

Rovian "talking point" horrors of the election year...grumble grumble... appeal to middle america...grumble. sigh

Do you think offshore drilling will increase the supply?

Do you think it would keep the revenue in America instead of sending it to the middle east?

Do you think anyone should want to study medicine because it will take 10 or so years to start their practice?

Hi Jazzycat, thanks for stopping by. My main point was that despite what the GOP says, it can't have an effect on current prices. Obviously any drilling will increase production, but at what cost environmentally? If we're talking about a ten year investment, it will help this country economically, environmentally, and for our national security to find alternatives to oil.

Are you suggesting we stop producing what we are now using (oil) in the hopes of developing something that is little more than hope?

I think battery operated cars may be the ultimate answer. What do you think of nuclear power replacing oil for electricity which would work well with battery operated cars?

Not that we stop all production, but that we don't pin our hopes on getting every last drop and damn the consequences. For a long time politicians in Washington (and not just the GOP) have fought sensible measures like increasing fuel efficiency standards on cars. Now we're where we're at.

It needs to be seen as our most vital national security. If we can spend billions of dollars and thousands of lives on wars, then we can get a lot more serious about conservation and alternative energy sources.

I'm mixed on nuclear power. The waste is a huge problem. And when something goes wrong, it can be devastating. If there were a better way to deal with those problems, I think that it could be a good way to power electric cars.
