Hillary Clinton is

The devil, from the 13th-century Codex Gigas.

Okay, I have had enough of Hillary Clinton's campaign. Today she called a press conference, and almost shaking with rage, denounced mailers from the Obama campaign:
"Enough with the speeches and the big rallies, and then using tactics right out of Karl Rove's playbook," she said, alluding to President Bush's former chief political advisor. "This is wrong, and every Democrat should be outraged."
Not as if her campaign hadn't sent out misleading mailers itself. The list of "tactics right out of Karl Rove's playbook" used by the Clinton campaign is very long. I've mentioned some of them before, but Kevin provides an extensive catalog of them. This move, like the absurd plagiarism accusation, reeks of desperation. I think she's just hoping that the splash made by the conference will bounce around the media echo-chamber just enough to tarnish Obama before the next primaries. Going negative has not worked for her before, and I hope it backfires this time. The hypocrisy of the Clinton campaign is breathtaking.

Wait a minute, I thought I was supposed to be the outraged one and you were the sensible one. I'm confused. :-)

Wow, I can tell you're pretty upset. Don't blame you. I posted on this as well, and included a link to you. As well as to Kevin. Thanks for the info.

She's desperate. That's how I read it. Not to mention, she and her campaign looks schizophrenic at this point. Those internal divisions within her camp have caught up with her, it seems.

It's her Dean scream!

Cowboyangel: I also agree that Clinton is desperate. My sense, though, is that the desperation is by this point pretty transparent. The conventional wisdom making the rounds of the evening news last night and the morning shows this morning is to frame Clinton's remarks as pure strategic positioning. Of course, that has a lot to do with the fact that the political media report everything as strategic positioning, even when it's really substantive debate, but for once this ingrained media habit accurately reflects the reality.

I also think that yesterday really was Clinton's "Dean scream" moment. My wife, who two weeks ago was a firm Hillary supporter, was extremely off-put by Clinton's ridicule of Obama and his supporters yesterday (the line that got endlessly replayed yesterday and this morning about "the skies opening up" and all that). Her assessment, and she's almost never wrong, is that Clinton really is done.

P.S. Liam-- cool page from Codex Gigas! There's a B&W plate of that page in Bruce Metzger's The Text of the New Testament, but I'd never seen it in color.

Brian,

I actually got a chance to see it when I was in Prague on my honeymoon. It was great. That photo is on the wikipedia page that I link to.

Cool-- you really saw it? (On your honeymoon??!??!?!?!) Is it as "gigantic" as its name implies?

It's pretty big. I've seen baroque choirbooks that are bigger, but this was huge considering it was just a collection of texts.

They're going nuclear. Now we've got the Barack Osama photos...

Hey, what about Ralph Nader? Does he rate Satan-status for jumping into the race at this stage of the game?

Nader will be even less important in this race than he was in 2004. Obama's comments on him were pretty good.

If you have a chance could you convey to 'William' that his post on McCain was excellent. I can't post on his blog because someone told him I was "naughty." Jack

What's wrong with you "liberal, moderate" catholics. In the U S, a religious crazed nation, to use Bloom's term, religion should not, but is, an important part of our political process. McCain begs for support from notoriously anti-catholic preachers (who call the catholic church an evil 'religion' and the whore of babylon) and where are you guys. Then McCain switches from Anglican to Baptist and not a word is said. What does Archbishop Burke expect: vote for Nader or write in B16. Jack
